The two things to let someone else do

The last key of the first month. Tomorrow you walk through a gate.

Patrick Lencioni writes business fables, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team is his, and in 2022 he released a ten-minute assessment built from watching his own team get frustrated. Six kinds of work in every project, in order: Wonder, asking whether something could be better; Invention, coming up with the idea; Discernment, judging whether it's good; Galvanizing, rallying people to it; Enablement, helping it happen; Tenacity, finishing. Each of us has two that are genius, two we're competent at, and two that drain us.

I took it. I'm Discernment and Invention. My frustrations are Tenacity and Galvanizing. That one sentence explained twenty years of starting things well and needing someone else to carry them over the line. It's also why Vault Human is built with a system around me that supplies the finishing. We ran this on ourselves first.

Working Genius isn't a personality test. It measures the work itself. A project stalls at whichever step nobody has a genius for. The personal use is this: your two geniuses are the kinds of work you'd do for free and lose time inside; your two frustrations are the kinds you can do and should not be asked to do daily, because they cost you more than they cost someone wired for them. Most burnout, in Lencioni's account, isn't too much work. It's too much of the wrong kind.

It's the right last key because it closes the loop the first twenty-nine opened. Mandino said form the habit. James said never suffer an exception. Clifton said build on the strength. Working Genius adds the thing nobody wants to hear: know which part of any job you should hand off, because self-knowledge that ends in doing everything yourself isn't self-knowledge. It's pride with a plan.

The first month is called You. The last thing to know about you is which two things you should let someone else do. That isn't weakness. It's the beginning of a team.

A coach. Every day. For the whole of you.
